We like to Read – The Snail and the Whale

Posted on October 3, 2013

We love to read, especially books that allow us to dream of travel and wanderlust! Inspired by the wonderful Tigerlilly Quinn’s blog we are going to share our favourite stories and books we like to read.

And we could only start with one of my all time favourites, “The Snail and the Whale” by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by the wonderful Axel Scheffler.

I love this tale – of the snail with the itchy foot! He lives on his black rock but dreams of seeing the world, even though the other snails tell him to “Sit still! Stay put!”.

But with his silvery trail he puts out a plea which the great big, grey-blue humpback whale sees and holds out his tail for the snail to climb on to and travel with him.

And off on their adventures they go – seeing “towering icebergs and far off lands” and “fiery mountains and golden sands”.

And all goes so well until the whale swims too close to the shore and can’t get off, with time running out it’s up to the snail to save him…

It’s a wonderful book that is perfect for reading out loud and also for all ages – my 2 year old loves it and so does my 6 year old…and so do I! It’s full of adventure and it understands that desire to see the world, that there is so much out there to be discovered.

Have you read “The Snail and the Whale”? I’d love to hear any recommendations you have for children’s books!
