1. The Music

Havana is positively bursting with music. Every few steps there is music, usually live, playing. We stayed at the historical Hotel Ingleterra in Havana, where they had their own house band and we spent many a lovely half an hour or so with fresh orange juices all around and just listening to the amazing music.

2. Ice Cream

Cubans love ice creams and it is very serious business over there. One of our favourite trips out was to the totally kitsch-looking Coppelia ice cream bar in Havana. The opening scene of the film “Fresa y Chocolate” was filmed here and it is just the coolest place! It’s somewhere to really soak up the real Cuban atmosphere and eat some great ice cream into the bargain!

3. Museums

Really!! We had a great time at the Museum of the Revolution (Museo de la Revolucion) – which was once the Presidential Palace…our 5 and 3 year olds were fascinated by the gunshots which mark the building from when Castro & co stormed the Palace in Havana – “are they really real?!”. And the tanks and airplane outside really caught their imagination.

4. Beaches

Cuba is a beautiful tropical island and as such has all of those things that kids love – sandy beaches for shell spotting and lizard catching (way too fast but we can try!), beautiful warm sea for swimming with tropical fish and palm trees galore for fresh coconuts straight from the tree. It really is paradise for kids (and adults too!)

5. Old cars

Cuba really is full of the big old American cars it is synonymous with and best of all it’s possible to ride along in them whenever you like. Cars which would cost a fortune anywhere else are all chugging about the roads ready to be flagged down. We had a few rides on the bouncy seats of old Chevrolet, Cadillacs and Chryslers and it felt like such a stylish, fun way to travel.
