Travel Mishaps – “Closed on Mondays”

Posted on August 1, 2013

Because travel, especially with children, is rarely if ever completely mishap free I thought it would be interesting to look at some of those times when things don’t go exactly to plan!

So, here’s my latest mishap!

On our recent trip to Paris my 6 year old son was feeling a little ill but we felt that a trip to the Musee D’Orsay – where he really wanted to see some “real life” Monet paintings – would be the perfect tonic. So we treked off – two metro trains and then a fair walk…with the 6 year old in the pushchair, 4 year old walking and 2 year old being carried. All in all it felt like quite an effort. So when we arrived to no queues we couldn’t have been happier…this slowly turned to frustration / annoyance / exhaustion when we realised that it wasn’t just quiet, it was actually closed.  It set the scene for the rest of the day then…an attempt to rescue the situation with a walk to the Jardin de Luxembourg which we had to abandon half way in due to a combination of weariness, heat and overall desire to just rest (this was the 4th day of a very full on trip!). So then trains, long walk back to the apartment, up the four flights of stairs and then the 6 year old was sick everywhere! What a day.

The moral of the story? Check our destinations before we set off. I still can’t believe I didn’t!

Where is the furthest you have been to visit something that turned out to be closed?! Come on, make me feel better, I can’t be the only one to have done this!! 🙂
